There are plenty of types of superheroes in the comics; some got their powers by accident, some by birthright, and some acquired them by sheer force of will and determination, but all of them have one thing in common: superpowers. From merely being able to lift incredible weights to having reality-altering powers, not all superheroes were created equal, and today, we decided to rank the 30 most powerful ones. From mutants to aliens and deities, let’s see who the biggest powerhouses in the comics universe are.
30. Elaine Belloc
Elaine Belloc is the daughter of Michael Demiurgos and by her dad’s side of the family, she inherited omnipotence. Yes, Elaine is that powerful. She is basically a deity in her own right. She can be omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, can fly, can manipulate matter on an atomic level, can use magic and is immortal. Common sense tells us that she should be higher on this list right? But we don’t really see Elaine in the comics nearly enough to see her in action to place her any higher.
29. Raven
Raven is one of the most notable members of Teen Titans and the daughter of Trigon, one of the most powerful demons in DC comics. With such genes, she can tap into vast reserves of power. Raven’s primary ability is astral projection through her Soul-Self, which takes the form of her human shape or a giant raven. This allows her therapeutic consciousness projection and offensive attacks, rendering foes unconscious. She wields Darkness Manipulation, generating and shaping darkness for attacks, along with Energy Construct Creation. Psychokinesis enables her to manipulate matter and energy at the atomic level, while Flight allows her to levitate and fly without visible dark energy projection.
28. Hope Summers
Hope Summers was always meant to be special considering that she is the first mutant born after the legendary “M-Day.” Hope, an Omega Level mutant, possesses the unique ability of Power Manipulation. Her primary power, Power Mimicry, allows her to copy the abilities of nearby mutants without the need for physical contact. Unlike others with similar powers, such as Rogue, Hope can instantly and subconsciously utilize any copied power at its full capacity, with complete control. There is no limit to the number of powers she can copy simultaneously, but wielding multiple powers can be taxing. The duplicated powers fade over time, with distance, or through usage, which is the primary reason why she’s not higher on the list.
27. Zatanna
Zatanna’s skills in magic landed her on our list, mostly because the way she does magic is truly unique. Zatanna, one of the world’s most powerful magicians, possesses mastery over mystical and cosmic forces, allowing her to manipulate reality. While she typically uses verbal enchantments, she can employ alternative methods, earning her the title of “Sorceress Supreme.” Her magical abilities include logomancy, enabling her to speak spells backward for supernatural effects, such as atmokinesis to control weather and the disintegration of objects.
26. Invincible
Invincible is no mage or mutant, but he is an alien-human hybrid with the makings of an excellent superhero. Mark possesses Viltrumite powers that grant him superhuman abilities. His potential for strength, speed, and durability surpasses that of regular humans, and he can continually enhance these attributes through self-discipline.
25. Captain Atom
Captain Atom was a regular human under the name Nathaniel Adam before he was involved in an accident during the experiment that sought to uncover more about Quantum energy. Following the accident, Nathaniel seemingly transformed into another type of lifeform and gained powers of Quantum Field Manipulation (whatever that meant) and the powers to manipulate disintegration, molecular reconstruction, healing, size alteration, density control, and really, pretty much a long list of physics-related powers. He’s deserving of this spot trust me.
24. Hyperion
Hyperion is a Superman clone and Eternal and has pretty much all the same powers you can imagine a Superman clone to have. Hyperion, sharing a common Eternal physiology, absorbs cosmic radiation in a process akin to nuclear fusion, granting him various superhuman attributes. With superhuman strength reaching several hundred tons, he nearly matches the likes of powerful beings such as Gladiator. Hyperion’s superhuman speed allows him to run, move, and react at Mach 4, complemented by enhanced agility, balance, and reflexes. Additionally, he possesses the ability to levitate and achieve orbital velocity during flight by manipulating gravitons.
23. Nova
Whether we’re talking about Sam Alexander or Richard Rider, the key to Nova’s power is the Helmet. The Nova helmet grants its wearer enhanced physical abilities, including superhuman strength, speed, and durability. It also provides the user with the ability to fly at incredible speeds through space. Most important however, the helmet allows access to the Nova Force, a powerful energy source that can be channeled for energy blasts, protective shields, and other offensive and defensive capabilities.
22. Black Bolt
Black Bolt is not only on our list of most powerful superheroes, but he is also on the list of most powerful Inhumans as well. Black Bolt’s primary ability lies in the harnessing of ambient electrons through a unique organic mechanism in his speech center. Wearing a metallic antenna, he can channel and focus these powers more precisely, allowing for controlled phenomena such as enhancing physical strength and executing powerful punches like the Master Blow. Beyond electron manipulation, Black Bolt can transmute elements, manipulate matter and energy, and even create solid fields for travel.
21. Adam Warlock
Adam Warlock was created as a part of an effort to create the perfect human specimen, powerful by default; he was made even more devastating when High Evolutionary gifted him with the Soul Stone. Adam’s unique biology grants him vast and dynamic powers. He was often described as a being part of the “cosmic norm” by Thanos; Adam’s power, especially during his time as the Magus, surpasses even powerful entities like Dark Quasar. His symbiotic bond with the Soul Gem enhances his abilities, allowing him to sense its whereabouts at will, and making him the most powerful host to maintain his will under its control, rendering him immune and able to counter its use by others.
20. Green Lantern
Plenty of notable characters in DC history have carried the mantle of Green Lantern, but all of them, just like Nova Corps members, had one thing in common: the Green Lantern ring. Green Lantern rings harness pure energy from a Power Battery, often appearing as a bright green light, representing willpower on the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. These rings considered powerful weapons, manipulate fundamental forces of the universe, including electromagnetic energies like gravity and radiation. Capable of energy projection, they can produce various blasts or create weapons based on the user’s will, with the potential to stagger even powerful beings like Superman, and possess specific protocols, such as Code 1012 for incinerating extraterrestrial weapons and technology.
19. Aquaman
Not only does Arthur Curry have an inborn ability to manipulate water and marine life, but As an Atlantean hybrid, he also possesses physiology adapted to the deep ocean environment, granting him the ability to breathe underwater, endure extreme ocean pressures, and exhibit superhuman traits. Unlike typical Atlanteans, Aquaman can spend an extended time on dry land with heightened strength, speed, toughness, and endurance, making him significantly more resilient. His superhuman durability allows him to withstand small arms fire, survive extreme conditions such as falling from orbit, and endure the void of space, while his enhanced senses and energy resistance further contribute to his formidable abilities.
18. Doctor Fate
Doctor Fate, like several characters on this list, has access to one of the most powerful magical artifacts in existence, the Helmet of Fate. The Helmet of Fate serves as a potent magical repository, considered one of the most powerful artifacts ever crafted by a sorcerer. When worn, it endows the bearer with immense magical abilities, elevating them to among the most powerful sorcerers in existence. These powers include the manipulation and shaping of various energies, the creation of constructs such as ankhs, enhanced intellect, and the ability to see magic visually with magical sight.
17. Professor X
Professor X is not exactly a physical powerhouse, but he is among the most powerful mutants in existence. He is an Alpha-Level Mutant and the world’s greatest telepath, possessing vast psionic powers. His telepathy allows him to read minds within a 250-mile radius, with the ability to extend it further when synced with Cerebro or Cerebra, connecting to every mind on a planet. Xavier’s telepathic abilities include creating illusions, cloaking his presence, establishing mind links, camouflaging appearances, delivering mind blasts, exerting mind control, and even possessing the minds of others.
16. Martian Manhunter
Martian Manhunter was always in Superman’s shadow even though he has a plethora of powers and abilities that rival even Superman himself. J’onn J’onzz, with his unique physiology, possesses a versatile power set that includes psionically controlled shape-shifting at the molecular level. This ability enables him to mimic other forms, alter their size, become invisible, and phase through solid matter. Additionally, he exhibits superhuman strength, stamina, and durability, making him a formidable being capable of matching Kryptonians in raw strength and withstanding various forms of damage, including bullets and energy blasts.
15. Iron Man
You’re probably surprised by seeing Iron Man so high on this list, but there is a good reason for that. Intelligence is Tony’s greatest strength, and it has no limits, just like his suits. In his Iron Man armor, Tony Stark possesses superhuman strength, capable of lifting up to 100 tons and achieving even greater levels when powered by more potent sources. The armor grants him superhuman speed, allowing him to outmaneuver agile opponents like Spider-Man and the Human Torch. Additionally, it enables flight at speeds exceeding Mach 10, with recent models capable of reaching orbital escape velocities and even warp speed, powered by a combination of solar converters, electrical batteries, and energy absorption from various sources.
14. Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, spellcasters in Marvel Comics. Wanda Maximoff, born with a magical birthright, possesses the innate ability to manipulate magic. As a candidate for the next Sorcerer Supreme, Wanda’s primary power is the manipulation of Chaos magic, allowing her to alter reality and control mystical energy granted by the old God of chaos, Chthon. Additionally, she can tap into divine sources and channel energies from other dimensions and entities like Cyttorak and Morrigan, serving as the Nexus Being for Earth-616’s central universe and possessing extensive knowledge of mystical spells and incantations.
13. Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange gets the upper hand over Wanda only due to his self-control. Dr. Strange, a master of the mystic arts, draws upon the powers of the Vishanti, a trinity of godly beings including Agamotto, Hoggoth, and Oshtur. Having defeated Death in a contest, he gained infinite longevity and fearlessness, no longer aging and resisting diseases. Dr. Strange wields powerful abilities such as energy blasts capable of destroying moons and planets, astral projection allowing him to traverse dimensions, banishment of creatures, conjuring objects, and transmutation through molecular alteration spells.
12. Flash
Flash might not be the most powerful on this list, but he is definitely the fastest and hence why he placed so high. The two most notable Flashes in history were struck by lightning and exposed to chemicals; they became a Speed Force Conduit, connecting them to a cosmic force that governs time and space. This connection grants them superhuman speed, allowing them to move at incredible velocities, surpassing even Superman. Wally’s deep spiritual understanding of the Speed Force and his mainline connection to it make him the fastest being in the multiverse, with reflexes, stamina, agility, and strength all enhanced to superhuman levels.
11. Supergirl
Supergirl is Superman’s older cousin and, as such, has pretty much the same powers and potential as him, only to a lesser extent. Kara, under a yellow sun, possesses Kryptonian powers, including solar energy absorption that grants her abilities like heat vision, super-hearing, and enhanced vision encompassing the electromagnetic spectrum. Her telescopic, X-ray, microscopic, and infrared vision, coupled with flight through the manipulation of graviton particles, make her a formidable force. She is like her cousin, super strong and practically indestructible.
10. Shazam
Shazam is, in reality, a teenage boy empowered by several gods, but that doesn’t stop him from being among the most powerful superheroes in DC comics. Billy Batson gains the powers of Living Lightning from six divine entities by invoking the magical word “SHAZAM,” representing Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. His transformation grants him superhuman strength, stamina, invulnerability, and the Wisdom of Solomon, providing vast knowledge and multilingualism. As a Champion of Magic, Shazam can also endure interstellar travel without sustenance or discomfort.
9. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is no ordinary mortal, and her powers and physical abilities are prime proof of that. Diana receives divine empowerment from the Gods of Olympus, gaining superhuman strength from Demeter, making her as strong as the Earth itself. Blessed by Hermes, she possesses superhuman speed, reflexes, agility, and stamina, as well as the ability to fly. With her link to the Earth, Diana exhibits high durability, rapid healing, and immunity to poisons and diseases, making her a formidable Amazonian warrior in Man’s World.
8. Franklin Richards
The only reason why Franklin is not the first on this list is because he is currently depowered. Franklin Richards, originally believed to be an Omega-level mutant, possessed immense telepathic, telekinetic, and reality-warping powers, creating pocket universes and equaling the Celestials’ might. His mutant status resulted from his subconscious desire for uniqueness, altering his anatomy at a cellular level. As an adult, Franklin displayed the ability to turn Galactus into his herald, resurrect Galactus’s essence, and empower a defeated Galactus to destroy Celestials, earning him the title “the great enemy of the omniversal order.”
7. Captain Universe
When bonded with a host, Captain Universe, empowered by the Enigma Force, exhibits varying powers and levels tailored to the specific needs of the situation. The Uni-Power enhances the existing abilities of a host and introduces powers like Uni-Vision, enabling cosmic consciousness, truth enforcement, and matter/energy manipulation at the atomic level. However, Captain Universe is bound to its native universe, and leaving it results in depowering, as the Enigma Force remains tied to its home realm, and this is why it’s so relatively low on this list.
6. Captain Marvel
If you’re surprised by seeing Captain Marvel so high on this list, don’t be. Carol Danvers, a Human/Kree Hybrid empowered by the Psyche-Magnitron and Brood experiments, possesses a range of superhuman abilities. As Captain Marvel, she can fly at tremendous speeds, reaching interplanetary distances, and her enhanced physiology grants her superhuman strength, durability, agility, and reflexes. Additionally, she can absorb, process, and manipulate various forms of energy, allowing her to temporarily boost her physical attributes, withstand energy-based attacks, and demonstrate a potent healing ability. Captain Marvel is powerful enough to blow up entire stars, and she is virtually indestructible.
5. Silver Surfer
Silver Surfer is notable for being the Herald of Galactus and as such he has access to Power Cosmic. Empowered by the Power Cosmic, the Silver Surfer is considered one of the universe’s most powerful beings, ranked as an Alpha Plus and potentially a universal-level threat. Despite often restraining his full power, the Surfer exhibits superhuman strength, rivaling the Hulk’s rage-enhanced might, allowing him to perform feats like redirecting starships, shattering Vibranium walls, and withstanding extreme conditions, including the pressures of a black hole and the heat of supernovas. His entire body is enveloped in an indestructible metallic coating, rendering him virtually invulnerable to physical harm, extreme temperatures, and radiation.
4. Hulk
Hulk is sort of a weird character. He lacks the mind-blowing reality-altering powers and abilities of most characters on this list, and the only reason he frequently makes it into the top 10 of every “most powerful” list is due to his literally unlimited strength and durability. Bruce Banner’s exposure to the Gamma Bomb’s radiation transformed him into the Incredible Hulk, resulting in a gamma mutate physiology characterized by increased bone marrow and muscle tissues. The Hulk’s strength escalates with his adrenaline levels, making him potentially the most physically powerful being in the Marvel Universe. Described as an Omega Level Threat and the most powerful mortal entity, the Hulk’s strength is virtually limitless, capable of ravaging entire worlds and earning recognition as one of the most powerful beings in existence.
3. Thor
Thor is an Asgardian God of Thunder and a force to be reckoned with. As the son of Odin and Gaea, Thor possesses superhuman attributes, including exceptional strength, invulnerability, and godly stamina. His godly strength allows him to lift over 100 tons, engage in battles with powerful beings like the Hulk and Silver Surfer, and demonstrate feats such as resisting the gravity of a neutron star and destroying planets. Thor is nigh-invulnerable, immune to diseases and toxins, and has superhuman speed, agility, reflexes, and the ability to manipulate vast amounts of energy using Mjolnir.
2. Sentry
Sentry is so overpowered that it’s extremely difficult to use him in the stories. Not only is he currently the most physically strongest, fastest, and invulnerable superhero in Marvel Comics, but he also has a ridiculous amount of powers. The Sentry’s superhuman powers originate from the Golden Sentry Serum, which induces a phase-shift in his molecules, rendering him partially out of sync with reality. The serum triggers a photosynthetic reaction, resulting in an elevated state of consciousness and reality-warping abilities. Described as having the power of a million exploding suns and considered an Omega-Level Threat, the Sentry exhibits molecular manipulation, allowing him to craft constructs, influence biophysical effects, and even resurrect the dead under extreme emotional distress. His powers are considered godlike, and after merging with the Void, he becomes arguably the most powerful superhuman on Earth.
1. Superman
I’m sure no one is surprised by Superman’s number one spot, as he will forever be a golden standard when it comes to strength and integrity in the comics in general. Superman, a Kryptonian, as long as he has access to enough Yellow Sun Radiation, has unlimited potential in terms of his physical limits, and his powerset is constantly getting upgrades. Besides super-breath, flight, heat vision, and various other types of vision, he also gained the ability to emit all stored energy in a supernova-type blast. He also gained the ability to vibrate his molecules at a higher speed for various effects. Superman gained enhanced powers from Warworld’s Genesis-powered “white” sun, derived from the crystallized blood of an Old God. These enhancements include the ability to create energy constructs, freeze and break apart objects with his bio-electric aura, and teleport across interstellar distances.
