Scotland's Caroline Weir is facing a lengthy lay-off after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament.

The 28-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, capped 102 times, was injured in the first half of Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Belgium at Hampden.

Her club say she will undergo surgery in the next few days.

Scotland lost Manchester United midfielder Emma Watson to the same injury in a training session late last week.

The influential duo will miss the remainder of Scotland's Nations League campaign, with a double-header against the Netherlands next month and games against Belgium and England in December.

    Emma Sanders

    BBC Sport

The Women's Super League is back this weekend and Chelsea are aiming to win a fifth title in a row - but can anyone stop them?

Emma Sanders has attempted to predict where each team will finish this season based on what we saw in 2022-23, each clubs' business in the transfer window and how they have all performed in pre-season.

Four months have passed since they clinched the crown in May and their traditional top-four rivals - Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City - will be hoping to break their stranglehold on the league title.

Will this season see anyone else break into that top four? And can newly-promoted Bristol City, the only non-Premier League owned club in the league, be able to compete at the top level?

    Read Emma's predictions here.

"We understand we need to be better. We've seen teams suffer these defeats before and come back."

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom on bouncing back from the 8-0 loss against Newcastle:

"We want it to be a one off and we need to take things from it.

"There are things in there that can be big reminders. At times we were good and even in the first 20 or 25 minutes we had spells as the better team.

"We know the margins are so fine and we know how well we have to play to get the wins, so we must be critical. Some things happened in the second half that we can't allow to happen again."

Sheffield United have been really good out of possession this season and been so organised. It has been difficult for teams like Manchester City and Tottenham to score against them.

That was why it was such a shock to the system against Newcastle.

Maybe they just thought with it being at home they could have a go but they underestimated their task and got picked off in a big way. They tried to go toe to toe with them and left big holes. They got it drastically wrong.

You can’t dwell on the result either although you have to understand why it happened.

It's about realising the detail of what you’re up against and the concentration levels and details of how you train and apply it. They have been in games and had actually started the season quite well, only to not get results. This has really put them back.

At times, you will lose to top sides, predominantly Sheffield United will. So, it’s about how to get the results and get some wins. It is possible to lose to Newcastle and still find out where the good was.

From that game though, they could take nothing other than real disappointment.

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche on why the club's recent victories have come away from Goodison Park:

"Scoring a goal, as simple as that. They are the fine lines of football. You have to score goals and we are beginning to see the team is capable - and that is a good sign.

"Goodison has been great, the fans have been great. The cutting edge is beginning to come and long may that continue.

"It's about continuing to build [a bond with the fans]. We want the fans to see a team that gives everything. Once you reinforce that with winning everyone believes more and that bond grows tighter."

    Everton

Sean Dyche on whether this is the closest he has been to having an Everton team in his image:

"We knew we would have to get a more balanced squad and I think we have done that well.

"Generally the performances have been good and the last two games we have got our reward from that.

"I have been pleased with the relentless attitude to keep working and I commend the players on that.

"It's not easy when there's so much noise around the club. I have said to the players that we are the only ones who can change the story.

"We have some very good players. At Everton you have to win, whatever tactics you play. We can all debate tactics. You can lose a game but the tactics were right - it's the delivery of it."

Sheffield United have reportedly spoken to former manager Chris Wilder over the possibility of replacing Paul Heckingbottom. (Football Insider)

Heckingbottom led the Blades to promotion from the Championship last term but has struggled to get results in the Premier League, picking up just one point from six outings, while they were beaten 8-0 against Newcastle on Sunday.

Wilder's previous stint in charge of Sheffield United came between 2016 and 2021 - finishing ninth in the Premier League in 2019-20.

That and more can be found in Thursday's gossip column.

Sunday's 8-0 defeat at home to Newcastle has left Sheffield United rock-bottom of the Premier League standings.

Paul Heckingbottom's men have claimed just one point, courtesy of a 2-2 draw against Everton, and the manager is already under serious pressure.

They will be eager to show a positive response when they travel to West Ham, who have lost their last two games, albeit those fixtures were against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Sheffield United's last win at the London Stadium came in 2005 when they two clubs met in the Championship.
