Groom Surprises Bride with Wedding-Themed ‘I’m Just Ken’ Performance: ‘Put That Married Hand in Mine' (Exclusive) (2024)

A groom’s unique version of “I’m Just Ken” is taking the internet by storm!

Wedding photographer and videographer Lex Nelson of Lex & Trev's Photo + Film shared a video on TikTok of groom Coles Prince, 31, serenading his bride Jordan Prince, 33, during their wedding reception with a hilarious original take on Barbie's "I'm Just Ken" entitled "I'm Just Groom."

In the video, Coles takes inspiration from Barbie actor Ryan Gosling’s performance at the Academy Awards ceremony as he sings Ken's anthem in a silver sparkly cowboy hat. The members of the couple's wedding party surround him and provide backup vocals for the performance.

Some of the fun lyrical changes the groom made includes belting out, “Cause I’m just groom/ And I’m so in love with you,” and changing up the chorus to “he said ‘I do’ " and “put that married hand in mine/ so hey, world that’s my wife, yeah I’m just groom.”

The video has garnered over 150,000 views in two days, over 27,000 likes and nearly 300 comments with several people writing about how sweet the song was. One person commented, “Where is the green flag guy? This is sooooo cute!" Another person added, “Marry him again.”

Coles tells PEOPLE that his musical performance all came together after his bride hinted that she wanted him to sing during their ceremony in Woodstock, Georgia, on May 4 — as music had “played a very special role” in their relationship over the years. Jordan previously wrote and recorded a song for him on Valentine’s Day, and he said he wanted to “pay back the amazing gift.”

The only issue was finding the perfect song for the ceremony that would also make his future wife “smile.”

“I wanted something that was personal and meaningful to us,” he said. “So then I had the idea of changing the words of a song to be specifically about us and convey how excited I was to be marrying Jordan.”

He said it wasn’t until the couple watched Gosling perform “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars that he realized what song he wanted to sing.

"... Everything clicked,” Coles recalled. “We loved that movie, we [listened] to the song all the time… [I thought] I can make this work. Being Ken is very similar to being Groom so it just made sense.”

He said once he got the idea, it took him “a day or two” to rewrite the lyrics to make it fit perfectly with what he wanted to convey: “The first line I came up with was ‘I’m just groom, number two person in the room,’ and it made me laugh. If I found it funny, hopefully Jordan would too and the rest fell into place after that.”

Despite having minimal time to prepare for the surprise song, he and the wedding party — who also sang the backup parts — were able to pull it off, much to Jordan’s delight.

“I couldn’t stop laughing and smiling from ear to ear,” Jordan recalled. “I just remember thinking how amazing the lyrics were and how good he sounded singing the song.”

“Coles is very talented and it always makes me so proud and happy to see him perform,” she continued. “It was such a fun and special moment. Simply put, he brought down the house. Everyone found it so funny and erupted in applause.”

It was the icing on the cake to a wedding day they said they will “never forget.” As for any advice Coles had for grooms out there trying to do something special for their brides, he said “to not take yourself too seriously and remember why you’re doing it.”

“Seeing Jordan’s smiling face was all I needed to have the confidence to pull it off and seeing her reaction was well worth it,” he said. “I’d wear that sparkly cowboy hat everyday if it made her happy.”
