6-foot 5-inch Pete Gaudin and CheS' Military Institute 88 to 67 in ter who scored 12 individual points each The Pack led 34 to 32 at the half and never trailed after that although Bulldogs tied the score twice at 43-43 and 45-45 Tech produced the high scorer of the afternoon in Gary Richardson who chalked up 15 points 11 of them from the free throw line LOCAL boxing also saw the New Iberia Yellow Jackets coached by wily Batson Dugas complete their regular season with nine wins in dual-meet matching They completed the coup by going on to win the state Class A-AA boxing championship after their sweeping total of 57 points eclipsed rival 43 points in the boxing affair held in Blackham Coliseum Ronald Fremin completed a double sweep by winning his fourth straight 'high school boxing title (only the third man in history to do it) and the coveted Brink trophy OVER at St college the classy Eldridge (Pcgo) Smith was voted the most outstanding back at a banquet held for the players early ki tbe year The Frank Minvielle one of the best ends to ever play for the school was selected on the first place 5-A all-district and the Panthers managed to snare a ma Jority of spots on the first second and third place teams Yellow Jacket basketball lost me of the greatest coaches when Doc Hymel retired from the game and became principal of one of tbe local elementary schools But before first match over St In other events the Jeanerette Little League had one of their best seasons a local ski club the Pelican treated New Iberia to some fine amateur water siding the NIRD cage tourney the eighth such was highly successful and won by Evangeline Motors attempts to form a semi-pro baseball team failed and on Jan 28 the New Iberia Yellow cagers won their first tourney in the history of wear the Yellow Jacket uniform and he left behind him one of the moat envied records on the football field The Jackets continued their winning ways on the cinder track in 1956 by copping the majority of events at the annual Southwestern Louisiana Institute relays Samar also won the 100-yard dash breaking his old record of 103 while doing it ADDING to their cinder laurela the Jackets copped the Terrebonne High school relays In 1956 by tcor-ing a whopping 77 points But the biggest victory of all for the Jackets came when they beat the best that two triple-A Baton Rouge schools had to offer They scored a wafer-thin victory over Istrouma in i triangular meet The Jackets defending twin A track champion had 55 points Istrouma 54 and Baton Rouge 41 It was a banner year all the way around for the Jacket! in track and field It also saw them lose their competent coach John McGraw who pec a me prinicpal of the school when Wimberly atepped up to Superintendent of Iberia Parish schools ON the local fishing scene wet misty climes and a audden squall failed to dampen the spirits of thousands gathered for the fifth annual Iberia Rod and Gun Club fishing rodeo held in October Rodeo officials boasted that a record number of area fishermen well over the previous mark of 1112 and mark of 730 turned out to cast for the top fish and the record prizes amounting to $4000 That figure also topped the previous year's mark of $2-949 Kearns Voorhies of New Iberia came home from the two day event with the distinction of being the best all-around fisherman Voorhies won a set of travelling luggage for his efforts Ha booked a red fish weighing 30 pounds measuring 41 Inches another red fish weighing 23 pounds Voorhies waa the first day winner IN city bowling the short summer Classic league proved to be one of the best in bowling history in New Iberia It was a dowa-to-the-wire affair with Cafe coming out on top followed by Queen City Mattress second end Falstaff Boer third Nick Rowan had the season high individual series with a 664 and the high individual game with a 254 Sid GuUlot received the trophy for the high average of the season Falstaff received the high handicap team series Queen City received the trophy for high team handicap game and Miller received the trophy for high individual game ONE of the highlights of the winter play came when all five members of the team In the Classic League bowled a 300 or better game and all rolled a 500 or better series This was tbe first time that this feat had been accomplished during the season In bowling trophies went to deco for its first pace finiah after winning 53 and a half games Second place was garnered by Service Station with 46 games and third piece waa notched by Segura Buick which copped 45 games during the season Individual honors in bowling went to Mary Ann Molbert Elaine Wood and Dot Derouen The ladies contributed to the fine keg-ler play seen all season As was predicted the city bowling tourney was the most successful as well ss the highest ever bowled in the history of the local keg sports Sid Guillot emerged the city champion and Bill McKee the allevents champion Cafe was the leader in the weekly Petroleum league bowling and captured team honors DAVI NOTE In the following report the Daily Iberian reviews the athletic year and achievements In New Iberia and surrounding area By RAY BROUSSARD Iberian Sports Editor New Iberia and area sports for 195fl soared the heights and plumb ed the depths as the playing field saw a contrasting blend of all that was good and bad Iberia baseball for the first time since the inception of the Evangeline League in 1934 when the locals became a charter member writhed through the coils of strangulation that gradually threatened the entire minor setup Baseball on the local scene on May 19 when the Iberia Baseball Association the board of directors of the New Iberia entry in the Class Evangeline League announced that play had been abandoned because of that kept the Indians floundering since the beginning of the season IN sharp contrast the New Iberia Yellow Jacket football teanf under the direction of Coach Jim Williams and aides won a district championship for tne first time in the history of the school And the Jackets proved they deserved the 5-AA championship by copping five places on the alldistrict team selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Freddie Davidson Tommy Powell Warren Brasher James Conrad and James Grace were the five Yellow Jackets which made the first place team In addition Harold LeBlanc center and Gerald Kapp end just missed making the first team by the narrow margin of one vote The Yellow Jackets won the district championship by virtue of their scoreless deadlock with Crowley in game played in a of After that game the Jackets tromped back to their dressing room in Crowley smiles peering from masks of mud realizing that they owned the crown with a 1-0-2 record over 1-1-1 Jacket backs when there a sea of' mud spattering in their eyei ran as bird as they could with a slippery elusive pigskin James Conrad leading the vanguard Delahoussaye gaining stature at quarterback Sparks Viller-min Powell and Moss all gave evidence of their hard play when they strode off the field one almost indistinguishable from the other FROM there the Jackets went on to defeat Purple Tornadoes 27-13 but that was their last blaze of glory for 1956 they ran out of gas A week later they went out to do battle with Randy Brown and the Opelousas gridders and eine out of the game on the short end of a bitter 34-12 count It was truly the end of the football season for the Jackets but they had finally brought home the grid WITH regard to baseball the local entry suffered the bitterest pill it was ever confronted with when the New Iberia Indians on May 19 Iberia Baseball Association president A Bowab in commenting on the decision of the board to quit said mere trickling of fans averaging about 400 a game was the direct cause of the decision to suspend play decision grieves us said Bowab "The board of directors as well as players and officials of the team have spared no effort to bring the best of baseball to New Iberia felt the fan response was not there and we the board of director feel that operating a baseball club is too expensive an operation to continue at such a terrific Bowab averred THE year 1956 marked the end of baseball in New Iberia and perhaps meant the suspension of play far mote than just one year Several weeks ago the New York Yankees offered the local club a full working agreement But when Evangeline League president Ray (Moon) Mullins called for a public meeting on the matter a mere four people showed up Mullins said I guess they just want baseball here The franchise will just go to some other On Jan 6 1957 the Evangeline League will hold its regular meet- ing in New Iberia and Mullins is expected to announce which city will accept New franchise THERE was considerably better news in other sports The New Ibe-ria Yellow Jacket track team led by redoubtable Allen (The Horse)!
